Day One: A Tribute to Harvest in Wine Packaging

Ximena Ureta's Award-Winning Design Celebrates the Art of Winemaking

Day One, a wine packaging design by Ximena Ureta, pays homage to the critical moment of harvest in winemaking. This design, which won the Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2021, merges art, technology, and sustainability, reflecting the essence of the MontGras vineyard and the meticulous process of hand-harvesting.

The inspiration behind Day One lies in the balance between sugar, acidity, and tannins that determine the quality, finish, and character of a wine. Ureta's design captures the moment when the winemaker decides to begin the harvest, a decision that is fundamental to the wine's character. The harvest scissors, a symbol of this critical moment, are depicted germinating among the flowers that protect the grapes and vine leaves.

Day One stands out due to its unique properties. It is a line of sustainable wines by Wines of Chile. All the grape varieties used are summer wines from the best and most renowned valleys in Chile. The vineyard complies with BRC and is on its way to obtaining the FOR LIFE certification, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability.

The design is realized using Fasson Cuvee Sable paper, printed in 3 special colors, offset, with matt gold foil, stamping, and protective varnish. The Burgundy label dimensions and conicity have been meticulously chosen to complement the design. The design team, led by Ureta, included Dante Curin, Juan Rojas, and others, who contributed to the design's success.

Day One's consumers are spread across the globe, in key markets such as Korea, China, USA, Chile, Canada, Denmark, Brazil, Japan, and the UK. The project, which started in September 2020 in Santiago, Chile, and ended in January 2021, faced the challenge of creating a new portfolio that is attractive, relevant, and innovative, in line with MontGras's new brand architecture and positioning.

Research was conducted into harvesting tools, especially the harvesting scissors used in the MontGras vineyards. The team also researched different packagings that could speak about harvest, and Selected Harvest and vegan wines around the world, to produce a unique and original design. The result is a design that pays tribute to the moment when a winemaker decides to begin the harvest, a decision that is fundamental to the quality, finish, and character of a wine.
